PRE-Procedure Guidelines
Discontinue Anti-Inflammatory medication (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Naproxen, Meloxicam, Curcumin/Turmeric) at least 3-4 days before your procedure.
Discontinue any blood thinning herbs, supplements, or vitamins 1-2 weeks before your procedure.
Discontinue Systemic Steroids (Prednisone, Hydrocortisone, etc.) 1-2 weeks before your procedure. If you take chronic oral steroids a discontinuation plan will need to be discussed with your primary care provider.
Discontinue Steroid Injections (cortisone) at least 1 month before your procedure.
Drink plenty of water and eat your normal meals on the day of your procedure.
POST-Procedure Guidelines
0-3 Days Post PRP Injection
Rest on the day of the procedure.
Limited use of the injected area, and gentle range of motion is encouraged two days after the procedure.
DO NOT apply ice to the injection site for the first 3 days (72 hours).
Significant post procedure pain will typically resolve during the first few days after the procedure. If you are experiencing post procedure pain, you can take Arnica orally or apply topically.
DO NOT TAKE anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Naproxen, or Meloxicam, for at least 2 weeks after your procedure.
DO NOT TAKE blood thinning herbs, supplements, or vitamins.
DO NOT TAKE systemic steroids such as: Prednisone, Hydrocortisone, etc. for at least 2 weeks following your procedure (this plan will need to be discussed with your primary care provider prior to procedure).
Do not wash treated area and avoid showering for 24 hours following your procedure.
Avoid taking hot baths or using saunas.
Avoid alcoholic beverages and smoking as these can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.
Drink at least 64 ounces of water daily to help you heal properly. Water does not mean tea, coffee or soda. If you are on a diuretic medication (water pill) please drink what is allowable for you.
3-14 Days Post PRP Treatment
At this point you should gradually start increasing your daily activities and increase your exercise. To maximize the effects of the procedure, proper exercise is necessary.
It is normal to experience mild-moderate bruising, soreness, and swelling in the injected area that may last from 3-10 days following your procedure. You can take Arnica as needed.
Ice can also be applied for 15-20 minutes, 3-4 times a day, as needed for comfort.
DO NOT TAKE anti-inflammatory medications.
Avoid alcoholic beverages for the first 7 days.
3-4 Weeks Post PRP Injection
Physical therapy is encouraged and can help your body fully heal the affected joint(s).
End results depend on many factors, including the number of injections, following post treatment care instructions, proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
Good general health is the key to excellent and predictable outcomes by supporting your cells to work well and promote healing.
